USAGE:
(1.) Прилагательное ill употребляется только предикативно и соответствует русскому краткому прилагательному болен. Русское полное прилагательное больной в функции определения передается различными словами (sick, bad, sore) в зависимости от того, к чему оно относится: the child is ill ребенок болен, ср., take care of the sick child позаботься о больном ребенке. Ill не имеет форм степеней сравнения, поэтому русское ему стало хуже передается сравнительной формой bad - worse: he was getting worse and worse ему становилось все хуже и хуже. (2.) Sick относится к общему состоянию человека и обычно используется в функции определения. Предикативное употребление sick в значении "болен" является нормой для американского, но не британского варианта. В британском варианте предикативное использование I am/I feel sick обозначает меня тошнит (рвет). (3.) Ни ill, ни sick не употребляются для обозначения какого-либо телесного повреждения или причинения боли. В этих случаях употребляется глагол to hurt или пассивная форма to be injured: I was badly injured in the accident and my knee still hurts я сильно пострадал при аварии, и колено болит до сих пор. (4.) Русскому больной в сочетаниях с названиями частей тела: больной палец, больное колено, больное горло - соответствует sore, если болезненное состояние является временным: a sore finger (knee, throat): I could not write because of my sore finger больной палец мешал мне писать; don't touch the sore spot, it huffs не трогай больного места (ранки, болячки), мне больно. Если речь идет о хроническом заболевании, то употребляется bad - to have a bad heart (a bad leg, etc): his bad leg gives him trouble whenever if rains когда идут дожди, у него ноет больная нога; the boy couldn't go in for sports because of his bad heart мальчик не мог заниматься спортом из-за больного сердца. (5.) Прилагательное ill, в отличие от других предикативных прилагательных, может определяться наречием very: he is very ill он очень болен. (6.) See afraid, adj; USAGE (1.), (7.). (7.) See very, adv
